Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Physics Division has an opening for a Project Scientist to join the team.
The LBNL Physics Division will build and test several thousand silicon strip detector assemblies (“strip modules”) and other associated electrical and mechanical components as part of the detector array for the upgrade of the Inner Tracker (ITk) of the ATLAS Experiment at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva Switzerland. ATLAS is a large general purpose magnetic spectrometer used for particle physics experiments.
The strip modules consist of a sensor, and several printed circuits (“hybrids” and “power boards”) which must be precision mounted, interconnected, and tested. The project is entering a large-scale production phase which will last for several years. LBNL is responsible for a significant portion of this work along with collaborating institutions.
In this role, you will perform the QC that these components will require and provide scientific and technical coordination to postdocs and students, to support these activities.
This position is full time, in person, and based at the main LBNL site in Berkeley, California but includes occasional travel to meetings at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Weekly attendance at a variety of remote international technical meetings, including presentations, is also required.
What You Will Do/Be:

Provide the scientific and technical expertise required for the electrical testing and QC of the ITk silicon strip modules.

Responsible for the module and component electrical QC. Perform burn-in and thermal cycling, including verifying data, visual inspection, and updating local and project-wide bookkeeping. Perform installation and commissioning of a thermal cycling setup (cold box, chiller and DAQ). Oversee shipping of components to the downstream assembly sites.

Maintain and utilize Linux-based custom testing software and DAQ systems for burn-in and thermal cycling. Install and debug new versions.

Lead or participate in special projects/studies which may arise due to any new problems which develop in the course of production.

Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

Consult/coordinate with physicists and engineers at LBNL and collaborating institutions as needed.

Ensure proper documentation of procedures as well as ATLAS-required implementations and provide input to the production database.

Responsible for purchases of consumables and any equipment needed to carry out the above scope.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:

Carry out R&D related to silicon detector technology and contribute to publishing results.

Follow fabrication of PCBs as needed.
What is Required:
-
Ph.D in Physics or equivalent degree.
-
Two years or more experience in silicon tracking detector assembly and testing, or similar scientific instrumentation such as beam line systems, spectrometers, focal plane arrays, particle/radiation detectors.

Demonstrated ability to work in a research group environment. Potential to coordinate the efforts of technicians.

Ability to use computational tools such as DAQ software, scripts, and spreadsheets. Quickly adapt to new operating systems and computing environments if needed.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to analyze and prepare research results for presentation at seminars, plus scientific and technical meetings.

This position is expected to pay $7,992-$8,809, which fits within the full salary range of 7,609-$8,809 for the S13.P job code.
